A Saturday Morning Fog

 READ: Mark 4: 36-41
And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Saturday Morning Fog

When you get up early every morning for work, you sort of cherish your Saturdays when you can sleep in until maybe 7:00 or 8:00a.m., so I avoid making Saturday morning commitments. It is my only day to catch up on sleep, wake up with my husband, and not be jarred awake by the alarm clock. But on this particular Saturday I had a meeting to attend. I had to be on the road at 8:00 a.m.

I wouldn't have minded being up so early except when I went out to get into my car I noticed the fog. I minded driving in fog. Not an artistically layered fog like in old black and white British films. Not a misty fog that hugs the ground like in horror movies, but thick pea soup fog that would only slow me down and delay my arrival. Just an unsafe fog that makes driving dangerous.

As I pulled onto Michigan Avenue, and while still grumbling under my breath, I heard these words very distinctly. No, not audibly, but with some sort of "internal ears." I heard, "I know you've been down lately. It has been a long time since you 'mounted up with wings as the eagles.' I thought you might have missed the clouds, so I brought them to you."

My eyes teared up and I felt a calm and a peace that would accompany me to this meeting and far into the afternoon. I really feel that this was from God. I had a God sighting right there in my car.

For those of us who are married to scientists, or who paid attention in school, know how fog is formed, but as Christians we believe it was God who set those principles in motion. We know from the scripture above that the winds and waves obey Him. And the fog does too.

Pray with me . . .
Holy God, and a friend who sends "Good Morning Messages" give me the faith to trust in you when life's clouds hide your path for me. Let me see them differently, as moments when heaven draws close to me. Give me the courage to never feel unsafe in the fog again. Let earthly fog remind me that You surround me. Let me see You when I can't see anything else clearly. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Isaiah 40: 30 & 31:
He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
